Muharrem Eryasar is a 36-year-old political prisoner who is suffering from inoperable naso-pharyngeal cancer and Behcet’s disease. His lawyers have so far failed to obtain his release on medical grounds. At present he is being held in Buca Prison in Izmir and is being treated daily in the cancer unit of a local hospital. He is transported to and from the hospital daily in handcuffs and is kept shackled to his bed while in hospital. Muharrem Eryasar’s eyesight is reported to be affected by Behcet’s disease and his cancer is reportedly preventing him from eating normally. The conditions in which he is held in Buca Prison are reported to be poor and insanitary.
