Turkey: “Judicial reform” package is a lost opportunity to address deep flaws in the justice system

The legislative package submitted to Turkey’s Parliament under the new judicial reform strategy risks being another missed opportunity to bring the country’s laws in line with international human rights standards, which ensures people in Turkey are not vulnerable to abuses of their rights, including the rights to fair trial, to liberty and to freedom of expression and assembly. Proposed amendments represent cosmetic changes which fail to address the structural flaws in a judiciary buckled and broken under sustained political pressure.
