Amnesty International calls on the Turkish authorities to end the crackdown on journalists for reporting on matters of public concern such as alleged corruption. The initiation of criminal investigations of journalists simply for doing their work of informing the public is a direct violation of the right to freedom of expression and an attack on media freedom in the country. According to the Journalists Union of Türkiye, there are 14 journalists and other media workers in prison as of March 2026. Scores of others are being subjected to baseless criminal investigations, prosecutions and convictions which are both harmful to the individuals concerned and create a chilling effect over the media landscape in the country.
