Turkey: Walls of glass

This document summarizes AI’s concerns about human rights violations reported from Turkey. The optimism which greeted the new government’s human rights programme, announced in November 1991, has given way to disillusion as reports of political killings, torture and death in police custody continue. Eight people died in police detention in the first seven months of 1992. AI has received an unprecedented number of allegations of political killings. During 1991 more than 50 killings of villagers and local politicians were reported in which the security forces were implicated. Since November 1991 more than 100 Kurdish journalists, members of the HEP, local politicans and others have been killed. Allegations of abuses by the Kurdish opposition PKK are also reported.
