This oral statement was delivered by Amnesty International at the 50th session of the UN Human Rights Council and provides commentary on the outcome of Iceland’s 3rd Universal Periodic Review. Specifically, it welomes the commitment to establish a strong, independent National Human Rights Institution, but urges greater progress towards ratification of important human rights and other treaties. Speedy progress is needed for the adoption of laws to prevent gender based, domestic and sexual violence against women and strengthened access to justice for women victims of violence.
