On 11 October 2024, Amnesty International filed written submissions to the European Court of Human Rights in the case of F.D. and I.M v France and 3 other applications. The case raises important questions regarding the enjoyment of the right to freedom of religion and to manifest religion or belief by women, girls, and racialised persons in the context of hijab bans in sports in France. Amnesty International’s third-party intervention responds to and reflects the key considerations the case raises on the state’s obligation to protect rights under the European Convention on Human Rights without discrimination.
