Mongolia: Falling short: The right to adequate housing in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia’s capital, is undergoing large-scale redevelopment to provide better housing and access to services for residents and to combat high pollution levels. Despite the advanced stage of the redevelopment agenda in Mongolia, relevant laws and policies are lagging behind practice. This briefing examines the process in place for ger area redevelopment and redevelopment of inadequate public housing buildings, the two areas of the redevelopment agenda that directly affect the most number of Ulaanbaatar residents. It reviews the current redevelopment legal and policy framework and assesses its ability to protect the rights of those affected by the redevelopment process.
