Chile: Pisagua: Reopening of investigations into the identity of human remains recovered from a clandestine grave

, Index number: AMR 22/006/1992

In January 1992 the Military Appeals Court (Corte Marcial) upheld an appeal against the decision of a military court, which had ordered the closure in 1991 of an investigation into the remains of victims of human rights violations, discovered in a mass grave in Pisagua in June 1990. Nineteen bodies and a bag containing human remains were found during an investigation by a local civil court into secret burials. The bodies were identified as those of prisoners of a former military detention centre in Pisagua, where supporters of the deposed Allende government were held after the coup in 1973. The names of victims whose bodies were found in the Pisagua mass grave and whose identities have been confirmed are listed here. AI welcomes the decision to reopen the investigation.
