AI's latest information shows that 54 countries have abolished the death penalty for all offences, while 15 have done so for all but exceptional crimes such as wartime crimes. Twenty-seven countries can be considered abolitionist de facto, retaining the death penalty in law but have not carried out executions for the past 10 years or more.
