Socialist Republic of Viet Nam: The espionage case against the nephews and niece of Father Thadeus Nguyen Van Ly.

This report details the arrest and case against the two nephews and niece of Father Thadeus Nguyen Van Ly. Father Ly was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment in October 2001 for, inter alia, his consistent calls for more religious freedom and public criticism of the Vietnamese authorities for their human rights policies. His two nephews and niece were arrested and have been charged with espionage, which can carry the death penalty or extremely long periods of imprisonment. Amnesty International believes the charges against the three are politically motivated. The organization calls for the three to be released immediately and unconditionally.
