Medical letter writing action: Taiwan: Executions and organ transplantation

Index Number: ASA 38/004/1992

Amnesty International is concerned by the continued use of executed prisoners as a source of organs for transplantation in Taiwan. Legislation was introduced in October 1990, permitting the practice and the first execution followed by removal of organs for use in transplants took place in December 1990. The question of involvement of medical professionals in executions where organs are to be removed for medical purposes is of particular concern to Amnesty International.
