Sri Lanka: Rape in custody

During 2001, Sri Lanka saw a marked increase in allegations of rape in custody, particularly by the army, police and navy. Most incidents occurred in the context of the armed conflict between the security forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Among the victims are many internally displaced women. Amnesty International is submitting this report to the new government, and the Committee for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, which is due to consider Sri Lanka’s third and fourth reports on 28 January 2002.
