India country campaign: appeal cases

The 15 cases which comprise this document deal with death in police detention and alleged torture and rape by the security forces. The victims include slum-dwelling children, dalits (members of “oppressed” castes), adivasis (members of tribal communities), teachers, shop-keepers, labourers, students and a policeman. The violations reported here appear to be widespread in areas where political groups are demanding autonomy, especially if armed opposition groups are active and states of emergency operative. The victims frequently come from poor and underprivileged classes; women from these groups are allegedly frequently raped in custody.
