People’s Republic of China: The case of Tang Yuanjuan (includes correction)

This paper gives information about the case of a group of prisoners of conscience who were arrested in north-east China in 1989. They were tried in late 1990, 17 months after their arrest. One of them, Tang Yuanjuan, a 33-year-old assistant engineer at the Changchun no. 1 Car Manufacturing Factory, was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment and an additional five years’ deprivation of political rights, the longest known sentence for political crimes since 1989. The others, Li Wei, Leng Wanbao, Liang Liwei and Li Zhongmin, received lesser sentences. Reports of the trial indicate that it was a mere formality. Notes on the court hearing and a transcript of the verdict are included, along with a summary of a statement by Tang Yuanjuan’s lawyer.
