Australia: The crisis of Indigenous youth detained in Australia – Joint written statement to HRC36

Indigenous children in Australia make up less than six per cent of young people aged 10 to 17 years, but make up 54 per cent of children detained, and are 25 times more likely to be in youth prison than non-Indigenous children. A series of abuse of Indigenous children in prison have been exposed in the latter years. In this joint-statement, Amnesty International and the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services (NATSILS) set out recommendations to the Australian government.
