Around 900 people remain arbitrarily detained for political reasons in Venezuela, according to the Venezuelan NGO Foro Penal. Many of these people are subjected to torture and other ill-treatment, enforced disappearance and arbitrary deprivation of liberty, with systematic lack of fair trial guarantees, prolonged incommunicado detention and denial of medical care. We call on Nicolás Maduro to release all those arbitrarily detained and to protect their lives and physical integrity while in detention, in particular by ensuring access to family visits and a defence counsel of their choice, in addition to dignified conditions of detention.
