AI is concerned about allegations of ill-treatment in five prisons in Texas: McConnell Unit, Terrell Unit, Michael Unit, Robertson Unit and Ramsey 1 Unit. The allegations include the beating of prisoners by prison guards, the death in detention of several prisoners, lack of medical care and handcuffing or shackling. Some 30 prison officials are reportedly being investigated in connection with these allegations. AI is calling on the Texas authorities to protect prisoners from such treatment.
