This document provides information about death sentences and executions in the USA in 1991: 14 executions took place and at the end of 1991 2,547 people were under death sentence. Issues such as alleged racial disparities in sentencing, and the sentencing of juveniles or mentally ill persons are examined. Legal developments of concern to AI are summarized including moves to extend the scope of the death penalty and to limit federal habeas corpus review of cases. Brief details are given of 9 cases of concern at the time of writing: Mumia Abu-Jamal, Barry Lee Fairchild, Glenn Ford, Johnny Frank Garrett, Justin Lee May, Harold “Wili” Otey, Robyn Leroy Parks, Earl Washington and Ray Copeland.
