At least 26 students of the Universidad Nacional del Centro del Peru are reported to have “disappeared” after the security forces detained them during August and September 1992. At least 19 of them were reportedly later found dead in circumstances suggesting extrajudicial execution. All the detentions took place in or near the city of Huancayo. Although relatives have denounced the “disappearances” and killings, no one had been charged as of the end of November. A Catholic priest, Father Angel Acuna, has received death threats after calling for an inquiry into these events. These violations occur in the context of counter-insurgency operations against violent opposition groups such as the Shining Path. Abuses by the Shining Path in Junin Department are noted.
