This report examines the consequences of Nicaragua’s total ban on abortion on women and girls who need life-saving medical treatment. It looks at the impact on access to treatment for obstetric complications and the implications for medical professionals trying to provide timely and appropriate healthcare. Amnesty International is calling on the Nicaraguan authorities to repeal the law criminalizing abortion in all circumstances. The State must provide legal access to safe abortion services where the life or health of the woman or girl is at risk, or the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest.
