This report describes AI’s serious concern about the apparent impunity enjoyed by the alleged perpetrators of human rights violations against thousands of people, including Mapuche Indians, during the period of military rule, 1973-90. The organization believes that the 1978 amnesty law should be repealed. Cases of “disappearance” and killing of Mapuches are described. They include the killing of four peasants from Puerto Saavedra; the killing of a university student in Temuco; the “disappearance” of an administrator at Pitrufquen Hospital; the “disappearance” of a farmer and Mapuche activist near Melipeuco; several cases of “disappearance” in Liquine and “disappearances” and killings of Mapuches in Lautaro and Galvarino. A list of those “disappeared” or killed is appended.
