Brazil: Political killing of trade unionist and political activist

There is concern at reports of the killing of married couple Jose Luis Sundermann and Rosa Hernandes Sundermann on 12 June 1994 in Sao Carlos, Sao Paulo state. Police are reported to be treating the killings as political. Jose Luis Sundermann was the Vice-President of the Sao Carlos Federal University Functionaries Union. The couple were both members of the newly formed Partido Socialista dos Trabalhadores Unificado (PSTU) and Rosa Hernandes Sundermann had recently been elected to its National Directorate. They are reported to have been active in supporting a number of strikes in the region.
