United Republic of Tanzania: Consideration of UPR reports

Amnesty International welcomes Tanzania’s engagement with the UPR and its acceptance of 187 out of 252 recommendations. However, serious human rights concerns remain.
Tanzanian authorities continue to weaponize the law to target the opposition and critical voices, using non bailable offence provisions under the Criminal Procedure Act to detain people for unreasonable periods of time as prosecution asks for more time “to complete investigations”. In October 2020, Amnesty International documented how the state enacted and instrumentalized various laws to silence perceived critics.
