During President Buhari’s nine months in office, the President himself and his government have repeatedly promised that human rights would be upheld by the military and that all violations would be investigated. Despite these promises, the government is yet to take concrete steps towards investigating serious crimes, including war crimes and possibly crimes against humanity committed in the north-east. In addition, despite some reforms, adequate actions remain to be introduced to ensure safeguards against future violations. The government must urgently take action to put its promises into practice. This public statement assesses the implementation of Amnesty International’s recommendations during President Buhari’s tenure.
