Burundi: 10 years of unending impunity and repression

We thank the Special Rapporteur for his report to the Council. This interactive dialogue is held as we mark the 10th anniversary of a crisis, sparked by the ruling party’s decision to front the late President Pierre Nkurunziza for a third term in office for the 2015 presidential elections. Peaceful demonstrations that followed were violently repressed and a once vibrant and open civic space has since been silenced. A decade on, the country remains caught in a relentless cycle of repression and impunity.
