Codes of professional ethics have the potential to help protect prisoners and detainees from human rights violations by setting out in unambiguous terms the prohibition against medical participation in torture and other abuses. None of the ethical declarations is enforceable in a court of law; however, some of the United Nations instruments do have the force of law.
