Amnesty International has today received reports that Mehdi Khiareddine Jarrar
was transferred on the evening of 19 April 1995 from an unknown detention centre
to the 9 Avril Prison in Tunis, more than 20 days after his arrest upon arrival
in Tunisia.
The prison authorities have reportedly confirmed to his family that he is
detained at 9 Avril Prison, but have to date refused them permission to see
him.
FURTHER RECOMMENDED ACTION: Please send telegrams/telexes/faxes/express and
airmail letters:
- calling for Mehdi Khiareddine Jarrar to be given immediate access to his
family and to medical care if necessary;
- expressing concern that he was held incommunicado for over 20 days, in breach
of Tunisian law, and that his family were not informed of his place of detention;
- seeking confirmation of his whereabouts and assurances that he has received
a medical examination in compliance with Article 13bis of the Tunisian Code
of Penal Procedure.
