At the appeal hearing on 5 July 1994 for the prisoners of conscience named
above, the original sentences of two years' imprisonment for all 14 were reduced
to three months' suspended sentences. They were all released immediately after
the verdict was pronounced.
Amnesty International welcomes the reduction on appeal of their sentences.
However, the organization continues to deplore the fact that they were arrested
and tried in the first place, simply for having exercised their universally
recognized right to freedom of expression and association.
No further action is required from the UA Network. Many thanks to all those
who sent appeals.
