One year after the closure of the secret detention centre at Tazmamert and the release of most of its 30 surviving prisoners, the Moroccan Government appears to have held no inquiry into the cases of 33 prisoners who died in detention there. Conditions were extremely harsh, more than half the prisoners held there dying from illnesses which resulted from inadequate nutrition, lack of hygiene, lack of medical care and neglect. Most died years after their original sentences expired. The prisoners at Tazmamert were mainly members of the Moroccan armed forces convicted of involvement in coup attemps against King Hassan II. AI is also concerned about four officers who are still “disappeared” and one prisoner in poor physical condition still detained without adequate medical care.
