Usama ‘Ashour, a political activist, was arrested on 29 July 2008 by Syrian Military Intelligence (SMI) at his house in Aleppo city. He is being detained incommunicado at the Military Security Branch in Aleppo, and is at risk of torture or other ill-treatment. He may be a prisoner of conscience, detained solely for the peaceful exercise of his right to freedom of expression and association.
