Nasir Al-Shibani, Muhammad Majed Al-Shibani: Two students of Thaqeef Secondary School in Taif have reportedly been sentenced to flogging after their trial by an Islamic court on 25 March 1996.

Two students of Thaqeef Secondary School in Taif, Nasir Al-Shibani and Muhammad
Majed Al-Shibani, have reportedly been sentenced to flogging after their trial
by an Islamic court in Taif on 25 March 1996. Newspaper reports state that
the two were sentenced for "attacking an Islamic education teacher earlier
this month using a hammer and knife."
Nasir al-Shibani has been sentenced to three months' imprisonment, and 210
lashes, 70 of which will be given in front of his fellow school students and
teachers. Muhammad Majed al-Shibani has been sentenced to two months'
imprisonment and 150 lashes, 75 of which will be given in front of students
and teachers.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Please send telegrams/telexes/faxes/express/airmail

- appealing for the sentence of lashes against Nasir Al-Shibani and Muhammad
Al-Shibani to be commuted;
- expressing concern about the penalty of lashes as a judicial punishment which
Amnesty International considers to be a form of cruel, inhuman or degrading
punishment, contrary to Article 5 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
