BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Amnesty International has condemned State Security Court proceedings as unfair,
on the grounds that they do not meet internationally accepted standards for
fair trial. The organization has called for a judicial review of the cases
of all defendants convicted before the court. Six people sentenced to death
on charges of "collaboration" still await hearings before the Court of
Cassation, and six others, who were sentenced to death having been convicted
of participating in an alleged assassination attempt on former United States
president, George Bush, during a visit to Kuwait in April 1993, are also awaiting
hearings in the Court of Cassation. Two others sentenced to death before the
Criminal Court remain in detention. One, Muhammad 'Ali Qalaib al-Rashidi, has
had his sentence upheld by the Court of Cassation, and may face the death penalty,
if it is ratified by the Amir of Kuwait, the other, Muhammad Najib, awaits
appeal hearings.
This is for information only. No further action by the Urgent Action Network
is requested. Thank you to all who sent appeals on these cases in 1993.
