Daoud Kuttab was released at 8.30pm on Tuesday 27 May 1997. During the week
he had spent detained in Ramallah Police Station he had not been interrogated
nor charged with any offence.
On the evening of Thursday, 22 May, orders were given, apparently by President
Yasser Arafat who returned to Gaza from Egypt that day, that Daoud Kuttab was
not to be allowed to receive any visits while he was in detention. His family,
lawyer, and others, including representatives of the United States Embassy,
were refused permission to see him over the following days. On Friday, 23 May,
Daoud Kuttab went on hunger strike in protest.
No further action is required. Thank you to all those who sent appeals.
