Dr Avraham Klingberg, a 75-year-old prisoner with hypertension and heart problems suffered a stroke on 16 November. A doctor and bacteriologist, he has been held in Ashkelon prison since 1983, following his conviction on charges of espionage, when he was sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment. Much of his time in prison has been spent in solitary confinement. An independent doctor has apparently stated that continued imprisonment could endanger his life. Amnesty International is once more urging that proper provision be made for his medical care.
