Iraq: Further information: Protester released but another still missing

URGENT ACTION
PROTESTER RELEASED BUT ANOTHER STILL MISSING
Firas Ali, an Iraqi political activist, was released on 27 April 2011 after having been held for two
weeks at a detention centre in Baghdad. The whereabouts of protester Haidar Shihab Ahmad
Abdel Latif are still unknown.
Political activist Firas Ali, was detained by members of the armed forces early in the afternoon of 13 April 2011 at
the Baghdad office of the Federation of Workers’ Councils and Unions in Iraq. Firas Ali was released on 27 April
after having been held for two weeks at a detention centre in Baghdad. Before his release he was cautioned not
to participate in further protests. He thanked Amnesty International for appeals on his behalf. No further action is
required for Firas Ali.
However, the whereabouts of Haidar Shihab Ahmad Abdel Latif, a 24 year old casual worker who attended protests
at Tahrir Square in Baghdad on 1 April 2011 for the first time, remain unknown. A relative of Haidar Shihab Ahmad
Abdel Latif told Amnesty International that on 7 May an official acknowledged his detention. No details of his
whereabouts were provided and relatives have not been allowed to visit him. Amnesty International fears he is
detained in conditions amounting to an enforced disappearance. Please continue sending appeals on behalf of
Haidar Shihab Ahmad Abdel Latif.
PLEASE WRITE IMMEDIATELY in English or Arabic:
Call on the Iraqi authorities to immediately reveal the whereabouts of Haidar Shihab Ahmad Abdel Latif and
to immediately grant him access to a lawyer of his own choosing, familiy visits and any medical care he
might require;
Call for the release of Haidar Shihab Ahmad Abdel Latif, unless he is to be promptly charged with a
recogizable criminal offence and brought to trial in full conformity with international fair trial standards;
Urge the authorities to ensure that Haidar Shihab Ahmad Abdel Latif and other protesters are not subjected
to torture or other ill-treatment.
