Tajikistan: Women and girls in Tajikistan: Facing violence, discrimination and poverty

By Amnesty International, , Index number: EUR 60/002/2009

Violence in the family is widespread in Tajikistan. One third to one half of women have regularly been subjected to physical, psychological or sexual violence at the hands of their husbands or their in-laws. In Tajikistan, violence against women is still considered a “family affair” and is not yet recognized as a distinct criminal offence and a human rights violation. In this document Amnesty International calls upon the Tajikistani authorities to improve their efforts to respect, protect, fulfil and promote the rights of women.
