The Azerbaydzhani parliament voted on 3 September 1993 to hand over to Russia
the five servicemen named above who had been sentenced to death by the Military
Collegium of the Supreme Court of Azerbaydzhan on 12 May 1993. The five Russian
servicemen, all privates in the Russian Seventh Army deployed in Armenia, had
been accused of taking part in fighting in the disputed Karabakh region in
June 1992, during which some 30 Azerbaydzhani soldiers were killed. Amnesty
International presumes, as was the case with another returned Russian serviceman
sentenced to death in Azerbaydzhan last year, that the death sentences will
not be carried out in Russia.
