Turkey: the case of Sinami Orhan, editor of Ak-Dogus

Sinami Orhan, a 24-year-old student and editor of the Islamic political magazine Ak-Dogus (Bright Dawn) has been on trial three times for publishing controversial historic documents which, the authorities claim, insult the name of Kemal Ataturk. At the first trial he was sentenced to 21 month’s imprisonment and to 22 months at the second trial; the third trial is still in progress. He started the first sentence on 19 August 1991. He is currently in a prison in Gerede near Bolu.
