Turkey: fear of torture: Ahmet Ibili

Ahmet Ibili, a correspondent for the political weekly newspaper Mucadele, was detained in Mersin on 18 August 1993 when its offices were raided by police. Allegedly the police had no search warrant and ransacked the office. Ahmet Ibili is said to have been beaten when he resisted. Those detained with him, but since released, reported that he was being subjected to severe torture and death threats and was being denied water. Under current legislation he may be held in police custody until 1 September 1993.
