Amnesty International is seriously concerned for the safety of Cemil Yöyler, who has reportedly been detained since 15 July 1999. Officials at Izmit Police Headquarters told his family that he had been moved to the prisoners’ ward at Izmit State Hospital after a suicide attempt.
