Turkey: Torture of a 13-year-old in Istanbul

In November 1994, Abdullah Salman, a 13-year-old apprentice, was taken into police custody in Istanbul, wrongly accused of theft. He was detained for three days and tortured by beating, choking and by electric shocks. On the third day, he was allowed to see a lawyer, who observed marks of torture on his body. He was released and given a medical examination which described injuries consistent with his allegations. The boy’s mother, who lodged a complaint against the police, has alleged that she was offered a bribe to drop the complaint. So far, no investigation has been opened against the police officers responsible for Abdullah Salman’s torture.
