France: Adoption of prisoner of conscience: Alain Cazaux
Alain Cazaux, a 22-year-old car mechanic from Bayonne, is serving 12 months' imprisonment for refusing to perform military service. He is a total objector, rejecting civilian as well as military service. He bases his objection on his anti-militarist and political beliefs. He rejects the institution of the army per se and also considers the French political and military authorities to be forces of occupation in the Basque region. He believes the length of current civilian service to be punitive. AI has adopted him as a prisoner of conscience.
