Sri Lanka: Wavering commitment to human rights
This document, based on evidence gathered during an Amnesty International visit to Sri Lanka in March 1996, reviews the human rights situation since the People's Alliance government came to power in August 1994. Whilst noting and welcoming a marked improvement in the human rights situation, there is concern that extrajudicial executions, "disappearances", torture and widespread arbitrary arrests are continuing in a climate of impunity. These abuses are taking place mainly in the context of renewed fighting between the security forces and the LTTE. This document details such violations by both sides. Appended is a list of "disappearances" reported since April 1995.
