Malaysia: Joint letter on proposed amendments to the Legal Profession Act 1976

, Index number: ASA 28/5127/2016

Amendments to the Legal Profession Act 1976 in Malaysia present serious human rights concerns. We urge the Malaysian government to reconsider pursuing these amendments, as they pose a serious threat to the independence of the Malaysian Bar, the right to freedom of association, and threaten the environment in which lawyers are able to freely speak out on matters of concern and public interest. This is a joint letter signed by Amnesty International, ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights, Asia Democracy Network, Civil Rights Defenders, Fortify Rights, Human Rights Watch, International Commission of Jurists, International Federation for Human Rights and Lawyers' Rights Watch Canada
