Further information on UA 242/92 (ASA 20/41/92, 28 July) - India: death penalty: Sukhdev Singh, alias Sukha, Harjinder Singh, alias Jinda

, Index number: ASA 20/053/1992

Both the above-named were hanged at 4am (local time) in Pune Jail, Maharashtra. They had been sentenced to death for the murder of General A Vaidya in August 1986, to which they pleaded guilty. Although both had been acquitted of charges brought under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) and were sentenced under the provisions of the Penal Code, they were nevertheless tried by a designated court established under TADA and the special procedures initiated under that law reportedly continued to be applied to their case.
