In this document, Amnesty International confirms its opposition to the death penalty in all cases. It considers the global trends in the death penalty; the death penalty in India and, finally, two specific cases from India. The first case looks at the execution of Dhananjoy Chatterjee on 14 August 2004 for the rape and murder of a schoolgirl. The second case is about four ‘untouchables’ sentenced to death under now lapsed ‘terrorist’ legislation for the killing of 35 members of an upper-caste group.
