In this open letter Amnesty International asks Hu Jintao to take five steps toward the “development of human rights” pledged by the Beijing Olympics Bid Committee in 2001. The five recommendations concern the release of prisoners of conscience; arbitrary detention; publication of death penalty statistics; freedom of reporting; and killings and detentions as a consequence of the March 2008 protests in Tibet.
