Uruguay: Excessive force by police in Montevideo
AI is concerned about the apparently excessive use of force with which anti-riot and mounted police disbanded a demonstration against the extradition to Spain of three suspected ETA members in Montevideo on 24 August 1994. At least one person was killed and 75 others, including members of the police, injured in the ensuing violence. These were the worst disturbances registered in the country since the return to civilian rule in 1985.
