Yousef al-Shehri was 16 years old when he was detained in Afghanistan on 30 November 2001 following the US-led invasion of Afghanistan. After his capture, he was transported to Shiberghan prison in Afghanistan. He was subsequently handed over to US custody and flown to Guantánamo Bay on 16 January 2002.
