USA / Macedonia / Germany: The Rendition of Khaled el-Masri
Khaled el-Masri was unlawfully detained during a trip to Macedonia in December 2003. He was interrogated by Macedonian officials; handed to US agents and secretly flown to Afghanistan where he was held in a US-run prison, during which time he was allegedly ill-treated. He was then flown to the Balkans after the US authorities apparently realized they had the wrong man. The Albanian authorities then arranged his flight back to Germany. The case seeking remedy for him in the USA was dismissed on grounds of state secrecy. This document calls for action from the Macedonian, German and US authorities.
